Compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005

The goal of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) is to make Ontario accessible by 2025. This important legislation sets out accessibility standards for customer service, employment, information and communications, transportation, and the design of public spaces. Each area addressed in the AODA details the actions related to accessibility to be taken by the employers and organizations to whom it applies. Designated employers and organizations are obligated to achieve compliance with the relevant AODA standards under a multi-stage timeline detailed in the legislation. Every person who is guilty of an offence under the AODA may be liable on conviction, to a fine of up to $50,000 for each day or part of a day on which the offence occurs or continues to occur; or if the person is a corporation, to a fine of up to $100,000 for each day or part of a day on which the offence occurs or continues to occur. Pinto Wray James LLP is a recognized leader in advising businesses and organizations with compliance issues respecting AODA obligations.
